VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Villanova softball team clinched a series win with a 4-0 victory over St. John's at the VU Softball Complex Saturday.
The 'Cats (13-39, 6-17 BIG EAST) shutout an opponent for the first time since March 18, an 8-0 victory over Saint Joseph's, in the win.
Lexi Kobryn (W, 5-10) pitched her first complete game of the season, striking out four, walking three and surrendering just two hits. Kobryn set down the first eight batters she faced.
The performance marks the second consecutive complete game for Villanova after
Kat Gallant went the distance in the series opener Friday.
VU struck first in the contest on a
Jaclyn Morra RBI double which scored Kobryn in the first inning.
With Kobryn and Red Storm (32-22, 9-14) starter Loreley Francia (L, 15-10) rolling, the contest remained 1-0 until the fifth inning, when
Maddie Burrows blooped an RBI single to right field which scored
Mackenzie Waghorn.
The 'Cats added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth via a
Lilly St. Jean two-run single to extend their lead to 4-0.
St John's brought the tying-run to the plate in the top of the seventh after loading the bases, but came up short as Kobryn struck out Gianna Nicastro swinging to end the threat.
Notably,
Elizabeth Gray had six putout on the day in left fielf, three of which she laid out in a complete dive for.
