Women's Cross Country Places Second at Regionals, Will Earn NCAA Bid
Junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) each finished in the top 10 individually and Villanova had a terrific team effort to finish second at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon. The finish will earn the Wildcats an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships when the official bids are announced on Saturday afternoon. This will be the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Villanova earns a team bid to the national meet.
Piccirillo and Cleirigh Buttner Go 1-2, Wildcats Second at BIG EAST Championships
Led by the dominant one-two punch of senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland), the Villanova women’s cross country team continued its upstart season in thrilling fashion at the BIG EAST Championships on Friday morning. Piccirillo won her first career conference cross country title, Cleirigh Buttner was the runner-up and the Wildcats had all five of their scoring runners earn All-BIG EAST accolades for finishing in the top 20 overall in a field of 80 runners. All of those strong performances led to a second place finish in the team standings for Villanova, which scored 49 team points and finished second only to a Providence team which is ranked fourth in the nation this season.

A team that has been steadily on the rise in 2016 will look to continue getting better when the BIG EAST Championships are held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Friday morning. Villanova has had plenty of success already this season and enters the conference meet with a No. 22 national ranking. The women's race at Friday's conference championships takes place at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the men's race at 11:50 a.m.
Nicole Armstrong Wins at Haverford Invitational
Junior Nicole Armstrong (Sydenham, Ont.) ran a strong race and finished first out of 43 runners at the Haverford Invitational on Friday afternoon. A small group of Villanova athletes took part in the local meet.
Women’s Cross Country Earns National Ranking in Latest Top 30 Poll
Villanova has earned a national ranking for the first time this season and checks in at No. 22 in this week’s United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) top 30 poll. The national poll was released on Tuesday afternoon and follows the new regional rankings published a day earlier. Following a strong team performance at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational last week, the Wildcats moved up three spots to No. 2 in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region rankings.

In a field that consisted of many of the top teams from around the country, Villanova got strong performances from senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) to finish 12th overall at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon. Piccirillo placed 19th out of more than 200 runners and the Wildcats finished ahead of seven nationally-ranked teams and another five schools that received votes in the most recent national poll.

For the second time in the eight-year history of the event, Villanova will compete in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational as part of a very strong field of 31 teams. The meet takes place on Friday afternoon at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, where the 6,000 meter women's race will go off at 12:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. Eastern time). Angel Piccirillo Named BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) was named the BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week for cross country in an announcement made by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second time in her career that Piccirillo has earned the BIG EAST weekly honor during the cross country season.
