Angel Piccirillo Wins Season Debut at Paul Short Run; Team Places Sixth
Senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) opened her 2016 season in dominant fashion with a 15-second margin of victory at the Paul Short Run on Saturday afternoon. Piccirillo and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) each finished in the top six overall out of more than 400 runners and Villanova placed sixth in the team standings in a strong overall effort. Piccirillo and Cleirigh Buttner each received awards for being among the top 25 finishers in the Women’s Gold race, while Piccirillo also received an award for winning the race.
Piccirillo and Cleirigh Buttner Run Well at Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational
Senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) led Villanova with a 19th place finish out of more than 200 runners at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon. Piccirillo and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) recorded times of 20:35.9 and 20:45.9, respectively, over 6,000 meters at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course to help the Wildcats finish 12th out of 31 teams that made up the meet field. Villanova finished ahead of BIG EAST rival Georgetown and Mid-Atlantic squads Penn and Princeton in the meet.
Bella Burda Leads Wildcats with Runner-Up Finish at Main Line Invitational
Sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was the overall runner-up and Villanova placed four runners among the top 10 finishers in a strong team effort at the Main Line Invitational on Friday evening. A contingent of seven runners from the Wildcats competed in the team’s first meet of the season, while the full Villanova lineup is expected to debut next month.
Villanova to Appear on BIG EAST Digital Network 17 Times During Fall Sports Season
The BIG EAST announced its fall lineup for the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) on Thursday featuring 86 regular season contests and five championships across five sports: men’s soccer, women’s soccer, volleyball, field hockey and cross country. Villanova is slated to have 17 regular season events air live on BEDN, including 10 home contests.
Wildcats Legend Marty Stern to be Inducted to Coaches Hall of Fame
Legendary Villanova track & field coach Marty Stern, who guided the Wildcats women’s cross country team to five straight national titles among his long list of accomplishments, was named on Wednesday afternoon as one of six coaches who will be inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Hall of Fame as the Class of 2016.
Senior Class of 2016 Feted at Annual Reception on Eve of Graduation
Commencement exercises will take place at Villanova on Friday afternoon but first, on Thursday evening at the Connelly Center, the student-athletes in the Class of 2016 were honored for their contributions to the university in the classroom, in the community and in athletic competition over the past four years. A group of more than 150 senior student-athletes and their families celebrated a level of achievement that seems staggering when viewed as an aggregate for the class as a whole.
Angel Piccirillo Earns BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete Award
Senior middle distance runner Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) was named Villanova's female winner of a BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award, presented by Sunkist, in an announcement made by the conference office on Friday morning. The award comes with a $2,000 scholarship which can be applied to graduate or professional studies. This is the second straight year that a women's cross country and track & field student-athlete has been the Wildcats female award winner of a scholar-athlete award.
Cleirigh Buttner Paces Wildcats to 30th Place at NCAA Championship
A young Villanova squad concluded their season on a high note and came in 30th as a team at the NCAA Championships at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
