Siofra Cleirigh Buttner is Athletics Ireland U23 Athlete of the Year
Junior track & field and cross country runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was recognized on Wednesday as the Athletics Ireland U23 Athlete of the Year. An awards ceremony was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood in Dublin where the country’s top athletics performers during the past year were recognized. Cleirigh Buttner had earlier been selected as one of three finalists for the U23 Athlete of the Year honor.
Bella Burda Wins Elite 90 Award at NCAA Cross Country Championships
Villanova sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) was announced as the winner of one of the top NCAA academic honors on Saturday afternoon at the awards ceremony following the NCAA Championships.
Angel Piccirillo an All-American; Wildcats Place 21st at NCAA Championships
When she made the decision last spring to come back to school and use her final seasons of collegiate eligibility, senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) was expecting big things of herself. She continued to make good on those expectations on Saturday afternoon when she placed 20th overall at the NCAA Championships. This is the first time in her career that Piccirillo will be an All-American in cross country, and the strong performances of the entire Villanova team helped the Wildcats come in 21st in the team standings. Villanova moved up nine spots from where it finished at the national meet a year ago.
Women's Cross Country Set for NCAA Championships on Saturday
Villanova earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with its second place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional last week. This is the 28th time that the Wildcats have received a team bid to the NCAA meet, including the eighth time in the last nine years. The 28 all-time berths to the national championships are tied for the fifth most of any Division I program.
Women's Cross Country Places Second at Regionals, Will Earn NCAA Bid
Junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) each finished in the top 10 individually and Villanova had a terrific team effort to finish second at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon. The finish will earn the Wildcats an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships when the official bids are announced on Saturday afternoon. This will be the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Villanova earns a team bid to the national meet.
Piccirillo and Cleirigh Buttner Go 1-2, Wildcats Second at BIG EAST Championships
Led by the dominant one-two punch of senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland), the Villanova women’s cross country team continued its upstart season in thrilling fashion at the BIG EAST Championships on Friday morning. Piccirillo won her first career conference cross country title, Cleirigh Buttner was the runner-up and the Wildcats had all five of their scoring runners earn All-BIG EAST accolades for finishing in the top 20 overall in a field of 80 runners. All of those strong performances led to a second place finish in the team standings for Villanova, which scored 49 team points and finished second only to a Providence team which is ranked fourth in the nation this season.
Next Step in Wildcats Progression Comes at BIG EAST Championships

A team that has been steadily on the rise in 2016 will look to continue getting better when the BIG EAST Championships are held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Friday morning. Villanova has had plenty of success already this season and enters the conference meet with a No. 22 national ranking. The women's race at Friday's conference championships takes place at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the men's race at 11:50 a.m.
Nicole Armstrong Wins at Haverford Invitational
Junior Nicole Armstrong (Sydenham, Ont.) ran a strong race and finished first out of 43 runners at the Haverford Invitational on Friday afternoon. A small group of Villanova athletes took part in the local meet.
