Oct. 11, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa.--The nationally-ranked women’s cross country squad will be in action this weekend at the Pre-NCAA Meet, which takes place at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville on Saturday morning. The site will be the host of the men’s and women’s NCAA Championships meet next month. Villanova competes on Saturday morning in the Women’s Seeded race, which begins at 10:15 a.m. and is the second of four races that will be held during the day.
There are eight nationally-ranked teams, including the Wildcats, in the 39-team field for the seeded section. Villanova goes into the weekend ranked No. 24 in the latest national poll released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Saturday morning’s race will be the third meet of the season for the Wildcats, who opened the season at the Main Line Invitational and also competed at the Paul Short Run two weeks ago. Villanova came in seventh as a team at the Paul Short meet.
Junior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was the top finisher for the Wildcats at each of the first two meets of the season. She came in second at the Main Line meet and placed eighth at the Paul Short Run. Senior Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.), junior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) have all been among the top five runners for Villanova at both of the first two meets.
In addition to the seeded race at 10:15 on Saturday morning the Wildcats will also have individual runners in the Women’s Unseeded race. That race begins at 11:30 a.m.
