Lipari Leads Wildcats With Seventh Place Finish at Pre-NCAA Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.--Senior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) was just eight seconds off the winning pace and came in seventh overall out of 340 runners at the Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday morning. Lipari registered a time of 20:17.1 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which will host the national championships next month. Villanova came in 16th as a team and finished with 556 points.

Lipari has been the top finisher for the Wildcats in each of her three starts this season. Her 6,000 meter time of 20:17.1 today was the second fastest of her career. Lipari was followed among Villanova finishers by senior Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who came in 21st with a time of 20:39.6.

Georgetown captured the team title in the meet with a score of 116 points and was followed by Florida State (162) and Butler (176) among the top three teams. The individual winner was Emma Bates from Boise State, who finished first with a time of 20:09.1.

Junior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) came in third for the Wildcats and 123rd overall with a time of 21:38.6. Rounding out the team's five scoring runners were redshirt freshman Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and true freshman Julie Williams (Wilmington, Del.). Piccirillo crossed the finish line in 21:57.1 and Williams registered a time of 22:11.8.

The final two runners in the Villanova lineup were redshirt freshman Caitlin Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with a time of 22:52.0 and sophomore Sydney Harris (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with a time of 22:54.4.

 

 

In addition to the team competition in the Blue Race the Wildcats also had freshman Katie Brislin (Manlius, N.Y.) running in the Open race later on Saturday afternoon. Brislin finished in 42nd place out of 102 runners in that race with a time of 23:09.21.

Villanova returns to action for the BIG EAST Championships on November 2 at the Wayne E. Dannehl course in Kenosha, Wis. The site last hosted the conference meet in 2009.
