Senior Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) won her first race of the season in dominant fashion, classmate Bogdana Mimic (Pancevo, Serbia) was sixth and Villanova placed fourth as a team in an extremely close race at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course on Friday afternoon. As a team the Wildcats had 232 points and the top four teams were separated by a mere 33 points.
Reid cruised across the finish line in 20:03 on the 6,000 meter course and came in two seconds ahead of runner-up Jordan Hasay of Oregon (20:05). This is the ninth win for Reid in her las 11 cross country races, including her fifth straight victory.
Villanova was the only team to have two runners in the top 10 and Mimic looked strong crossing the finish line in 20:15. Behind her were sophomores Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) in 39th place (20:52) and Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in 42nd place (20:55).
Rounding out the top five for the Wildcats was senior Callie Hogan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in 144th place with a time of 21:38.
The women's race featured seven of the nation's top 10 teams and 19 nationally-ranked squads overall in the 42-team field. Washington (199 points) won the team title, while Vanderbilt (211) and Arizona (230) rounded out the top three.
The next race for the Wildcats is the BIG EAST Championships on October 29 in Louisville, Ky.
