BETHLEHEM, Pa.--Seniors Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) and Nicky Akande (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished in the top 10 individually and Villanova came in third as a team in the Women's Gold race at the Paul Short Run on Saturday morning. It was a strong team result for the Wildcats, who finished ahead of three of the five nationally-ranked squads that made up the field of 48 teams competing in the Gold race.

Lipari ran the 6,000 meter course on the Goodman Campus at Lehigh in 20:30 and finished in sixth place out of 406 runners. Akande was right behind in eighth place and had a finishing time of 20:31 as the two Villanova seniors anchored the team's lineup. Redshirt freshman Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) came in 20th (20:58) and junior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) was 41st (21:18), while sophomore Sydney Harris (Colorado Springs, Colo.) rounded out the Wildcats scoring runners in 93rd place (21:46).

Villanova finished with a team score of 168 and finished behind only Georgetown (112) and Dartmouth (125), while Cornell was fourth (182) in a closely-contested meet for team scoring. Just 70 points separated the top four teams, while the Wildcats had Lipari and Akande each finish in front of the leading Hoyas runner.

Georgetown's top three runners came in 11th (20:40), 13th (20:43) and 15th (20:50), respectively, while the second-place Big Green had the individual champion in Abbey D'Agostino (19:44) and one other runner in the top-10 overall.

Junior Megan Venables (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and freshman Katie Brislin (Manlius, N.Y.) also ran in the Villanova lineup and finished 195th (22:31) and 363rd (24:13), respectively.

Entering today's race the Wildcats were ranked No. 12 in the nation and No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The meet resulted in Villanova finishing ahead of Cornell - ranked ninth in the nation - and Penn State, who started the week at No. 2 in the region and No. 13 nationally.

The next meet for the Wildcats is the Pre-NCAA Meet on Saturday, October 19 in Terre Haute, Ind. The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute is the site of this year's NCAA Championships, which will be held on Saturday, November 23.
