Five Water Polo Players Receive Academic Honors
June 23, 1999 Villanova, Pa.--- On Friday, June, 18, the American Water Polo Coaches Association released its All-Academic Team for the 1998-99 academic year. The All-Academic Team was broken into three categories which included Outstanding (3.71-4.0 GPA), Superior (3.41-3.70), and Excellent (3.20-3.40). Five women's water polo players received All-Academic honors including sophomore Katherine Kaufold, juniors Joie Marhefka, Sharon Fuller and Rene Scherr, and freshman Carly Sproul. Kaufold was the lone Villanova player named to the team under the outstanding category, after recording a 3.72 GPA in 1998-99. Marhefka (3.61) and Fuller (3.43) received All-Academic honors under the superior category, while Scherr (3.33) and Sproul (3.22) posted All-Academic excellent honors. These five Wildcat student-athletes played an instrumental role in helping lead Villanova to a 23-8 overall record and a top 20 national ranking all season long. The Cats finished third at the Mid-Atlantic Championships on April 17-18, and in fifth place at the Eastern Championships on April 23-25.
