VILLANOVA, Pa. - It was a thrilling final weekend of the 2012 regular season for the Villanova women's water polo team as the Wildcats earned a berth to the MAAC Championships for the first time since 2007.
Entering the final day of the regular season on April 15, the Wildcats needed a win, in addition to receiving some help to earn a spot in the MAAC Tournament. That exact scenario played out, as Villanova defeated VMI by a score of 10-3 and Siena dropped two matches to St. Francis (NY) and Marist. These results propelled Villanova into the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament.
The top four teams earn a spot in the conference tournament. Villanova finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with St. Francis (NY) and Siena. By virtue of the league's tie-breaking procedure, the Wildcats garnered the fourth and final spot in the tournament. Villanova opens up play in the MAAC Tournament on Saturday, April 28, against top seeded Iona at 1:00 p.m. In the other semifinal match-up, No. 2 Marist plays No. 3 Wagner. Start time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
Head Coach Damon Newman comments on the berth. "I am very happy with the play of our team during conference play. Our goal in the beginning of the season was to play for the MAAC championship. I am very proud of our team for setting this goal and accomplishing it."
Marist College will host the 2012 MAAC Championships at the McCann Natatorium in Poughkeepsie N.Y. on Saturday, April 28th and Sunday, April 29th.
