Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Conrath

March 11, 2014

Edison, N.J. - Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Conrath of the Villanova women's water polo team (4-12) was named to the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday evening.

"Julie has been working really hard throughout the season," said head coach Damon Newman. "She has been the backbone of our defense and her presence in the goal has lead us to four great wins in California. We are looking forward to continuing our momentum heading into MAAC play."

Conrath joins Offensive Player of the Week Megan Rodriguez (Wagner) and Rookie of the Week Emily Riddle (Wagner) as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's honorees.

In a 7-3 loss to Whittier last Tuesday, Conrath made 12 saves and recorded two steals. The following day, Conrath made 18 saves, leading the team in a 7-5 victory over Chapman. The Wildcats went into halftime down 3-2, but the Inverness, Ill., native kept the team in the game as the squad made a comeback.

Conrath has played in 11 games this season, making 105 total saves.

The Wildcats finished their California road swing 4-4 overall. Villanova returns to action on March 22 as the Wildcats host Marist and Siena to start conference play.
