Water polo had a successful weekend at the sixth annual Posada Royale Tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The team went 2-4 on the weekend, taking two wins over Pomona Pitzer and Cal Tech. Julia Penkal and Callan Edwards each registered eight goals in the weekend tournament.
Game 1: Villanova 7, Cal Lutheran 8
Cal Lutheran just slipped by the Wildcats in the opening game of the Posada Royale Tournament. The two teams battled back and forth through all four quarters, but Cal Lutheran’s extra goal in the final quarter gave them the edge to take the victory over Villanova.
The Wildcats saw first-half goals from Lauren Peachy (Harleysville, Pa.) and two from Callan Edwards (Oxnard, Calif.). Villanova would hold a 3-2 lead over the Regals at halftime. Cal Lutheran came out strong in the third and fourth quarters outscoring Villanova 4-2. Those four goals put the Regals a goal ahead of the Wildcats and give them the win when the final whistle blew. Villanova’s Naomi Ng (Kapolei, Hawaii) and Sarina Shibata (Honolulu, Hawaii) netted goals in the second half.
Game 2: Villanova 6, La Verne 8
The Wildcats dropped their second game of the tournament to La Verne 6-8. Villanova kept pace with the Leopards for most of the game, but a scoreless second quarter caused the ‘Cats to fall short in the end.
Both teams notched two goals in the first quarter. Callan Edwards recorded her first of three goals in the contest in the opening quarter. Edwards would also notch two goals in the third. Freshman Naomi Ng would also net a score for Villanova, but the Leopards got on the scoreboard as well and tied the game 2-2 headed into the second quarter.
La Verne continued to pressure Villanova’s defense and managed to toll three goals during the second period. They would take the 5-2 lead over the Wildcats at the half.
Villanova outscored La Verne 3-2 in the third quarter with two scores from Callan Edwards and a goal from Hannah Ishida (Honolulu, Hawaii). In the final quarter, each team got on the scoreboard just one time; Julia Penkal had the goal for the Wildcats. Despite their efforts, Villanova would not be able to close the gap to La Verne and the Leopards would take the 8-6 win.
Game 3: Villanova 1, Cal Baptist 12
Villanova suffered a tough loss to Cal Baptist 12-1. The Wildcats kept up with the Lancers in the first quarter as Julia Penkal (Harleysville, Pa.) put Villanova on the board. However, Penkal’s goal would be the only Villanova goal of the game.
The Lancers extended their lead each period and scored eight more goals. Junior Maddi Moore registered five saves in goal.
Game 4: Villanova 10, Pomona Pitzer 9
The Wildcats found some success in the pool as they notched their first victory of the season over Pomona-Pitzer 10-9. The game was pretty evenly played through three quarters, but Villanova’s three goals in the fourth quarter extended their lead enough to take the win.
Hannah Ishida led the team with three goals in the contest. She notched a goal in the first, second and third quarters. Julia Penkal and Callan Edwards each netted two scores, while Lizzie Newman (Lafayette, Calif.), Maria Campanile (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Sarina Shibabta tolled one goal apiece.
Junior goaltender Maddi Moore (Malvern, Pa.) recorded three saves in goal. The win was a true team effort as the Wildcats were able to shut down Pomona Pitzer in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 3-0 and giving them the edge they needed to pull off their first win of the season.
Game 5: Villanova 7, Occidental 9
Occidental slipped by Villanova Sunday afternoon 9-7 in another close contest at the Posada Royale Tournament. The two teams went nearly goal-for-goal in the first half, but Occidentals second-half scores would be the deciding factor in the loss for the Wildcats.
Villanova came out strong in the first quarter with goals by four different team members. Sarina Shibata, Julia Penkal, Lauren Peachey and Naomi Ng all put a score in the back of the net to give Villanova the 4-3 lead. The Wildcats kept rolling in the second half as Shibata and Penkal notched another score; Villanova led 6-4 at the half.
Occidental outscored Villanova 5-1 in the second half of play as Villanova’s only second-half goal came in the third quarter from Sadie Dutcher (Pasadena, Calif.). The game was tied headed into the final quarter, but they would be shut-out in the fourth and fall short to Occidental.
Game 6: Villanova 13, Cal Tech 4
Villanova ended their time at the Cal Lutheran tournament on a high-note with a 13-4 victory over Cal Tech. The Wildcats outscored Cal Tech in each of the four quarters of the contest.
Hannah Ishida led the team offensively with three goals. Julia Penkal and Laura Peachey each netted two scores for Villanova, while Sammy Salvo (New Canaan, Conn.), Callan Edwards, Sadie Dutcher, Naomi Ng, Elaine Resso (Modesto, Calif.) and Bryn Garrity (Madison, Conn.) each got on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats will continue competition in California when they take on Whittier on March 5th and Chapman on March 6th. The game will take place at 6 PM PT and 4 PM PT, respectively.
