EDISON, N.J. - Freshman Sarina Shibata has been named MAAC Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon. Shibata's recognition stems from her stellar performance in the CWPA/MAAC Crossover Tournament held at Villanova this weekend. She notched 12 goals and five assists on the weekend and tied two school records in the loss to George Washington.
Shibata (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) controlled the Wildcats' offense in the 18-23 loss to George Washington, tallying eight goals and one assist. The freshman attacker's eight goals and nine points tied a school record set by Kim Pare in the 2005 and 2006 season. Shibata also registered three goals and two assists against Harvard and one goal and one assist against Princeton. Shibata leads the team in goals with 17 in her 13 games played.
The conference named Iona's Alyssa Turza as the Offensive Player of the Week and Wagner's Laura Karbach earned the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Shibata and the rest of the Villanova squad will next head to Thousand Oaks, Calif to participate in the Cal Lutheran Tournament March 1-3.
