Staten Island, NY- The Villanova University women's water polo team opened up its 2002-03 season this weekend with two games against Wagner College and Marist College. The 'Cats earned a split on the weekend, falling to Wagner 14-8, but rebounded to beat Marist 15-6.

The Wildcats got off a slow start, but soon found their stride and kept their momentum going through the second game.

Offensively for Villanova, sophomore Ellen Howe (San Diego, Ca./Scripps Ranch) led the way with five goals and two assists on the weekend. Senior Maria Greshock (Harleyville, Pa./Souderton) added four goals and two assists. 'Nova showed a balanced offensive attack with eight different players scoring goals.

The Villanova defense was led by Greshock's six steals, with sophomore Sarah Oberhauser (Saratoga, Ca./ Saratoga) adding five. In goal, Denise Hanes (Chalfont, Pa./ Central Bucks West) tallied 11 saves, with freshman Jessica Wells (Newport Beach, Ca./ Corona Del Mar) adding six.

Villanova gets back into action the weekend of February 15-16, when they travel to Princeton, NJ to compete in the Princeton Tournament.
