Villanova Loses In MAAC Consolation Round

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Villanova women's water polo team saw its 2013 season come to an end on Sunday, April 28, with a 12-9 loss to Marist College in the consolation round of the MAAC Championships. The Wildcats end their season with an 8-29 record.

Villanova raced to a 2-0 lead to start the game on goals by freshman Naomi Ng (Kapolei, Hawaii) and senior Julia Penkal (Harleysville, Pa.). Marist controlled the rest of the period scoring four of the next five goals to take a 4-3 lead heading into the second period.

Trailing 5-4 late in the second half, Penkal scored her second goal of the game and freshman Sarina Shibata (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied a goal to give the Wildcats a 6-5 halftime advantage.

A goal by sophomore Callan Edwards (Oxnard, Calif.) in the first minute of the third period gave Villanova a 7-5 lead. Following the Edwards score, Marist took control of the match and scored six unanswered goals to lead 11-7 midway through the fourth and final stanza.

Shibata ended the Marist scoring streak with a goal at the 3:52 mark to make it an 11-8 game. After a Marist score, Shibata finished the game's scoring with another goal.

Shibata led the Wildcats in the loss with four goals. Penkal and Ng each added two scores for Villanova.

Marist was paced by Jessica Hamby who scored four goals.
