POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the semifinal round of the 2013 MAAC Water Polo Championships, the No. 4 seed Villanova Wildcats lost to the No. 1 seed Wagner College Seahawks by a score of 13-3. The event is being held at the McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the loss, Villanova falls to 8-28 on the season, while Wagner improves to 26-10.
Villanova will now play in Sunday's consolation match against No. 3 seed Marist at noon. Marist lost to No. 2 Iona in the other semifinal match-up by a score of 12-9.
Wagner scored the first three goals of the contest to take an early 3-0 lead. Villanova got on the board late in the opening period when sophomore Callan Edwards (Oxnard, Calif.) scored her first of two goals. The Seahawks scored with 1:20 left in the opening stanza and Wagner led 4-1.
Two straight Wagner second period goals opened up a 6-1 lead for the Seahawks. Villanova freshman Sarina Shibata (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored with 1:01 left in the first half to cut the Wagner advantage to 6-2. The Wildcat momentum was short lived, as Wagner's Lily Doerfler registered a goal with just one second remaining in the second period. The Doerfler tally gave the Seahawks a 7-2 halftime lead.
Wagner took control of the game by outscoring the Wildcats 3-0 in the third period to take a commanding 10-2 advantage.
Edwards scored her second goal of the game for Villanova late in the fourth period.
In the loss, freshman goalie Julie Conrath (Inverness, Ill.) was credited with seven saves.
