BROOKLYN, N.Y. - For the third straight season, the Villanova women's water polo team (10-18, 6-7 MAAC) clinched a spot in the MAAC Championships. The Wildcats fell in their last regular season games, 12-4 to Marist and 14-5 to Wagner Sunday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of the way our team played during the regular season conference play," said head coach Damon Newman. "We set a goal to qualify for the championship, and we accomplished that goal. All year we have exceeded expectations and we are prepared to do the same at league championship. We have two weeks to prepare for Wagner and we are looking forward to the challenge."
As the No. 4 seed, Villanova will face No. 1 seed Wagner (23-11, 11-1) in the first round of the MAAC Championship on April 26.
Game 1: Marist 12, Villanova 4
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Sarina Shibata tallied a goal at the three-minute mark. Two more Marist goals closed out the first quarter.
Naomi Ng scored in the second, but the Red Foxed notched five goals to lead 10-2 going into halftime.
Ng and Sadie Dutcher each scored in the third as the Villanova defense held Marist to just one goal. The Wildcats were unable to score in the final quarter and fell, 12-4.
Julie Conrath made 10 saves in goal.
Game 2: Wagner 14, Villanova 5
Lizzie Newman was first on the scoreboard in the second game, but Wagner responded with seven unanswered goals to close out the half.
