Water Polo Closes Season with 10-8 loss to Slippery Rock
Villanova, PA - In the last collegiate water polo match Carrie Boyle (Redlands, CA/Redlands) would play she tallied four goals and two assists, despite Villanova's 10-8 season ending loss to Slippery Rock. Boyle has tallied 74 goals and 34 assists in her senior campaign, making her a serious contender for several postseason awards. Katherine Kaufold (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Amanda Sewald (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) also ended their careers on Saturday. Kaufold tallied two goals in the match.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter, Villanova saw the lead get extended to 4-0 in the second quarter's opening minute. The Wildcats would fight back in the quarter's remaining six minutes to tie the game at 4-4 heading into halftime. Kaufold's two goals led the charge. Villanova would gain the lead, 5-4, a little over a minute into the third quarter when Boyle connected for her second of the game. The teams would trade the next four goals before, Slippery Rock struck with one second remaining in the third quarter. Holding an 8-6 lead entering the fourth, Slippery rock put the game away by tying Villanova 2-2 in the final stanza. Scoring the Wildcats other two goals were Whitney Mabry (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) and Jennifer Rosick (Pringle, PA/Wyoming Valley West). Rosick also tallied an assist. Maria Greshock (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) joined her on the assist board.
In goal, Carly Sproul (Moraga, CA/Miramonte) record seven saves and two steals. Villanova ends 2001 with a 7-17 overall record and 4-4 Mid Atlantic Conference mark.
