Water Polo Splits Pair in Opening Day of Southern Tournament
April 9, 2001
Grove City, PA - On Friday, April 7, the Villanova Wildcat water polo team competed in the first day of the Southern Tournament needing victories over Indiana and Salem International to extend their season into the Eastern Tournament. Unfortunately for the Wildcats they could only manage a victory in one of the games, a 19-14 rout of Salem. Villanova dropped a hard fought first game to Indiana, 16-8. With the win and loss Villanova's record now stands at 7-16 overall.
In game one against Indiana, senior Carrie Boyle (Redlands, CA/Redlands) was the story as she continued her torrid goal scoring by tallying four times. She also recorded an assist and four kickouts drawn. Boyle was joined offensively by Maria Greshock (Harleysville, PA/Souderton), two goals, Alisa Demmin (Fullerton, CA/Rosary) and Whitney Mabry (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) one goal apiece.
In goal, Carly Sproul took the loss despite an excellent effort. The junior tallied five saves and five steals on the afternoon. Other defensive standouts included Mabry and Boyle. The duo combined for five steals with Mabry getting three and Boyle recording two.
Game number two was a much different story as the Wildcats jumped out to a commanding 6-1 first quarter lead. Villanova was paced in the quarter by three goals from Erin Agee (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy) and two goals from Boyle. The Wildcats would not look back from that point on as they extended their lead over the course of the remaining three quarters. The lead reached a game high of eight when Katherine Kaufold (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) connected just 23 seconds into the second half.
Boyle and Agee led the Wildcats in the 19-14 victory with five goals apiece. The duo was joined offensively by Greshock and Kelly Ganz (Long Beach, CA/Woodrow Wilson), two goals each, and Mabry, Jennifer Rosick (Pringle, PA/Wyoming Valley West), Kaufold, Katherine Kidde (Pasadena, CA/Polytechnic), and Gretchen Miller (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), one goal.
In goal, Sproul earned her seventh victory of 2001 by recording four saves and three steals. With the loss to Indiana, Villanova was eliminated from participation in the 2001 Eastern Tournament. The Wildcats close their season on Saturday, April 8, when the square off with Slippery Rock. |
