Wildcats Split Four Matches at Home Tournament

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In the first of its two home tournaments this season, Villanova (3-14) split four matches at the Villanova Swim Center. The Wildcats played two matches on both Saturday and Sunday, posting victories over Utica and Slippery Rock in the process.

Villanova defeated Utica (14-4) and lost to Mercyhurst (12-5) on Saturday, while the Wildcats topped Slippery Rock (12-10) and fell to MAAC rival Iona (18-10) on Sunday.

Below is a capsule of each of the four matches.


Villanova 14, Utica 4

The Wildcats scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter and led 8-1 at halftime before settling on the final margin. Senior Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) netted five goals to lead six different goal scorers for Villanova.

Freshman Kathleen Maloney (Chicago, Ill.) added three goals in the match and the Wildcats tallied 25 shots to keep consistent pressure on Utica throughout the contest. Senior Julie Ramaley (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and freshman Maria Apablasa (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) scored two goals apiece.

Senior goalie Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) recorded her second win of the season in the net with 10 saves.

Mercyhurst 12, Villanova 5

After scoring two goals in each of the first two periods of the game, Villanova came up with just one tally in the second half and Mercyhurst gradually pulled away for the win. The Wildcats drew eight ejections in the contest senior Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) made five saves in goal.

The five Villanova goals were supplied by two players, as freshman Kathleen Maloney (Chicago, Ill.) contributed three scores and senior Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) tallied two goals.




Villanova 12, Slippery Rock 10

The Wildcats played a back-and-forth match against Slippery Rock that featured six ties and five lead changes throughout the contest. The last tie of the game was 7-7 late in the third quarter and Villanova never relinquished the lead after going ahead 8-7 on a goal by senior Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) with 1:40 left in the third period.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats clung to a 10-9 margin in the closing minutes before sophomore Andrea La Fevers (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored with 1:50 to play and senior Julie Ramaley (Old Greenwich, Conn.) added an insurance goal with 24 seconds left. The final goal of the game was a Slippery Rock tally with just five seconds left.

Martinez scored a team-high four goals in the win and four other players each chipped in two goals apiece. Villanova led 3-1 at the end of the first period but trailed 5-4 at halftime before establishing control in the third quarter.

Senior goalie Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) provided a strong effort in goal with 12 saves in the match to help thwart any further rally attempts by Slippery Rock.

Iona 18, Villanova 10

The 10 goals scored in the game by Villanova gave the team 22 goals in two matches for the day as the offense remained in top form. However, the visiting Gaels pulled away from a 9-7 margin at halftime with a 9-3 scoring edge in the second half, including scoring five of the six goals in the fourth period.

Freshman Maria Apablasa (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) scored four goals to lead Villanova, which was outshot 31-20 in the game. Fellow first-year player Kathleen Maloney (Chicago, Ill.) added two goals and seniors Julie Ramaley (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) also contributed two tallies.

Senior goalie Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) registered eight saves in the net.
