Wildcats Fall to Iona and St. Francis (N.Y.) in MAAC Games Played at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Villanova (3-16, 0-2 MAAC) opened regular season conference play with two matches played at Marist on Saturday at the McCann Center. The Wildcats were defeated by Iona, 15-10, in their first game of the day before falling to St. Francis, 14-6, later in the afternoon.
In the match against Iona, senior driver Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) scored four goals to lead Villanova, which fell behind 5-1 after the first quarter before playing the Gaels virtually even for the remainder of the match.
Sophomore Andrea La Fevers (Boca Raton, Fla.) and freshman Maria Apablasa (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) added two goals apiece for the Wildcats, who tallied 27 shots in the game. Martinez also won a pair of center sprints and had a steal for Villanova.
In goal, senior Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) played a strong defensive match with six saves and eight steals.
Later in the day, Martinez and Apablasa scored two goals apiece in the loss to St. Francis (N.Y.). Martinez and freshman Jennifer Lynch (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) drew three ejections on the Terriers and Foley had five saves and six steals in goal.
St. Francis led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and 5-2 at halftime before coming up with five goals in the third period and four more in the final quarter to put the game out of reach. After scoring four goals in the third quarter, the Wildcats were held off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
The two matches on Saturday were the first of four played during the weekend for Villanova. The team competed in a pair of matches hosted by Iona on Sunday and took on both Marist and Wagner.
