POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Villanova posted a 13-11 overtime Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Siena this afternoon to earn a split of its two games here. Earlier in the day, the Wildcats dropped a 15-1 decision to the host Marist Red Foxes.
With the split, the `Cats are now 3-3 in MAAC play (6-23 overall).
The Wildcats built a lead and then were forced to stave off a fourth period rally by the Saints to pick up the hard-earned win. Junior Maddi Moore played a pivotal role in securing the victory for the `Cats, making 10 saves in goal, including key ones in overtime, that helped VU sustain its margin of victory.
There were multiple other critical contributors to the win for Villanova.
Senior center Hannah Ishida scored three goals and added a pair of assists. In addition she drew six ejections in the game.
Classmate Julia Penkal also fired in three goals and added an assist. She matched Ishida's work by drawing six ejections in the game.
Other Wildcats to make a mark in the scoring column included freshman Naomi Nq (three goals and an assist); sophomore Callan Edwards (a goal and four assists); sophomore Sadie Dutcher (one goal); freshman Sarina Shibata (two goals and an assist) and Moore, who picked up an assist.
Penkal paced the `Cats with five steals in the triumph over the Saints.
In the opener the Wildcats and Red Foxes played a scoreless first period on what was Senior Day at Marist (19-10 overall, 5-1 MAAC). Ellie Hoffman opened the scoring for the Red Foxes at the 4:57 mark of the second period and that was followed by five more Marist goals in the period.
Villanova's goal was scored by Dutcher. The assist on the score came from Ishida. Moore made five saves in goal for the `Cats in the contest while freshman Julie Conrath made two saves.
The `Cats resume action on Sunday when they travel a bit further south in New York State to New Rochelle for a pair of games at Iona College. Villanova faces the host Gaels at 10:30 a.m. and then will battle VMI at 1:30 p.m.
