Salem, WV - On Saturday, March 3, the Villanova Wildcat women's water polo team traveled to Salem International in Salem, West Virginia to do battle in the first Mid-Atlantic Conference Weekend of the 2001 season.

In their first game of four over the next two days, the Wildcats emerged victorious for the first time in 2001 with a thrilling 12-11 sudden death victory over Bucknell University. With the victory Villanova improves to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

Leading the way for Villanova was junior driver Erin Agee (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy). Agee, who tallied 11 goals in two conference games on Feb. 17, continued her offensive dominance by netting four goals. Her offensive effort led Villanova. Joining Agee on offense was Carrie Boyle (Redlands, Calif./Redlands). The senior tallied eight times against Bucknell on Feb. 17 and added three more scores in this game. On the season, Boyle has netted 25 goals and 11 of them have come at the expense of Bucknell.

Boyle and Agee accounted for 58 percent of the team's offense. Accounting for the other 42 percent were Whitney Mabry (Houston, Texas/ St. Agnes Academy), two goals, Jennifer Rosick (Pringle, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), Kelly Ganz (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson), and Maria Greshock (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) one goal each. Earning the victory in goal for Villanova was Carly Sproul (Moraga, Calif./Miramonte).

In their second game of the day, the Wildcats did battle with vaunted rival Princeton University. In a well-played game, the Tigers left victorious over the Wildcats by the score of 16-7. For Villanova five different players tallied scores. Leading the way were Boyle and Ganz. The duo each netted two goals a piece. Other scorers for Villanova included, Agee, Mabry, and Greshock. Each player tallied once. Earning the loss in goal despite an excellent performance was Carly Sproul.

 

 

With the loss Villanova's overall record now stands at 1-7 and their conference mark is at 1-3. The Wildcats will be in action later tonight when they square off against Salem International at 8:30 p.m. The game has been changed to March 3 from March 4 at 8:30 a.m. Villanova will play one game tomorrow against George Washington at 11:00 a.m. before they travel to Southern California for spring break games against UC-San Diego, Occidental, Redlands, and Hawaii.
