Villanova, Pa. - On Saturday, February 17, the Villanova Wildcat water polo team hosted the 2001 Villanova Invitational. In their first game of the one-day invitational, the Wildcats suffered a heart-breaking defeat at the hands of Mid-Atlantic Conference foe George Washington, 13-9. With the loss Villanova falls to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, while George Washington improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Wildcats fell behind early for the fifth time this season. Trailing 2-0, the Wildcat offense exploded for four consecutive goals to gain a 4-2 advantage. Leading the explosion were junior Erin Agee, sophomore transfer Maria Greshock, and senior Carrie Boyle. Agee tallied two goals during the stretch, while Boyle and Greshock each netted one. George Washington responded with two goals mid-way through the second quarter to deadlock the game at 4-4. For Villanova, Boyle answered the George Washington challenge, netting her second goal of the game with 1:20 remaining. GW would answer once more before the half, making the score 5-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Villanova jumped out in front behind the arm of Agee. Agee tallied her third goal of the game just 54 seconds into the third and then responded with her fourth only 2 minutes and 31 seconds later. Leading 7-5, Villanova's offense was held scoreless for the remaining three and half minutes of the third quarter, while GW's offense got on track. The Colonials tallied three times before the end of the third to take back the lead for good, 8-7.

Villanova managed to tie the game at 8-8 after Agee scored her fifth goal of the game at the 5:18 mark of the fourth. From that point GW surged, scoring five of the next six goals, including four straight in a three and half minute span. The Wildcats tallied one final time when Agee scored her season-high sixth goal of the game with 55 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough as the Colonials walked out of the Villanova Swim Center with a 13-9 victory.
