Water Polo Posts 2-1 Conference Weekend

Villanova, PA - On Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25, the Villanova Wildcat water polo team traveled to Bucknell University to participate in the second CWPA conference weekend of the 2001 season. The Wildcats emerged from the weekend extremely successful after posting victories over Bucknell, 8-5, Salem International 14-8, and dropping a heartbreaking 10-7 decision to George Washington. With the two wins and one loss, Villanova now stands at 6-15 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Against Bucknell, Villanova jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead in the first half. Sparking the Wildcat run were Carrie Boyle (Redlands, CA/Redlands), Erin Agee (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy), and Whitney Mabry (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy). Each player netted a goal in the 14 minute span. In the second half, Agee got on the board just four seconds into the third quarter when she tallied her second goal of the day. Trailing 4-0, Bucknell fought back to cut the Wildcat lead to 5-3 at the end of the third quarter. Villanova's only other goal in the third quarter came from Mabry, her second of the day. From that point on, the Wildcats would control the match tallying three more times in the fourth quarter. Recording the goals for Villanova were Boyle, her second goal, Agee, her third tally, and Mabry, her third goal. Bucknell would get two more goals in the fourth, but the effort was not good enough as Villanova emerged victorious 8-5. Aiding the offense of Boyle, Agee, and Mabry was Kelly Ganz (Long Beach, CA/Woodrow Wilson). Ganz tallied three assists on the afternoon. Agee and Boyle both recorded assists as well.
In the Salem match, Villanova again exploded in the first quarter jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Villanova received goals from Boyle, three tallies, Agee, two goals, and Ganz, one goal. In the second quarter the teams traded goals to allow Villanova to enter halftime with an 8-3 lead. Villanova's two goals came from Maria Greshock (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) and Agee.
In the second half, Villanova got three goals in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Statistically for the Wildcats in the game, Villanova got four goals from Boyle, three from Agee, two from Ganz and Greshock, and one from Alisa Demmin (Fullerton, Calif./Rosary) and Kidde. Villanova got assists on nine of their 14 goals. Leading the way was Boyle and Ganz, each player recorded two assists. Demmin, Kaufold, Kidde, Jennifer Rosick (Pringle, PA/Wyoming Valley), and Gretchen Miller (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) also tallied assists in the 14-8 win. Against George Washington, Villanova fell behind early 3-1 before Boyle netted a goal with six seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Trailing 3-2 in the second quarter, the Wildcats hung tough as GW stretched their lead to 4-2. Boyle got her second and third goals of the game within a 22 second span to tie the game at 4-4. The Colonials tallied once more with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead, but Boyle responded with her fourth goal just ten seconds after the GW goal to retie the game at 5-5 heading into the half. In the second half, the Colonials surged jumping out to a two-goal lead less than two minutes into the third quarter. The advantage was one they would never relinquish as Villanova got only two more goals. Tallying the last two scores for the Wildcats were Agee and Ganz. Villanova will be in action next on April 6-7 when they do battle in the Southern Tournament. |
