LEXINGTON, Va. - Villanova traveled to Lexington, Va., on Sunday, March 24, where they played two matches at Virginia Military Institute. The Wildcats suffered a 10-5 loss to Wagner College in the morning match. In the afternoon contest, Villanova fell to Iona by a score of 18-9. With the two losses, the Wildcats fall to 3-22 on the season.
The Wildcats controlled much of the early going in the Wagner match and led 2-1 after the first quarter. Villanova's first quarter goals were scored by senior Julia Penkal and sophomore Callan Edwards.
Wagner outscored the Wildcats, 4-1, in the second quarter and the Seawolves went to intermission with a 5-3 advantage. Freshman Sarina Shibata posted Villanova's second quarter goal.
Two Wagner goals gave the Seawolves a 7-3 advantage, before sophomore Sadie Dutcher registered a score for the `Cats to pull her team to within three at 7-4. After Dutcher's tally, Wagner scored consecutive goals to take a 9-4 advantage.
Edward netted her second goal of the game with 3:06 to play and Villanova trailed 9-5. The `Cats were not able to get any closer and Wagner scored an insurance goal in the final minute.
Villanova received great goalie play in the loss from freshman shallow end goalie Julie Conrath and junior deep end goalie Maddie Moore. Conrath was credited with 10 saves. Senior center Hannah Ishida also had a strong match for the Wildcats.
After trailing 11-2 at intermission against Iona, Villanova made a strong third quarter comeback and cut the Gael lead to 12-8. Dutcher led the Wildcat charge with two third quarter goals. Villanova also received third quarter scores from Ishida, Penkal and freshman Naomi Ng.
Iona regained control of the match after Villanova pulled to within 12-8, as the Gaels outscored the Wildcats 6-1 the rest of the way.
Villanova will return to action on March 30 when the Wildcats will host St. Francis (NY) at 9 a.m. and VMI at 2:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Wildcats.
