Water Polo Wins Seventh Straight

ERIE, Pa. - Seven different players scored goals and 10 added assists in Villanova's 14-11 win over the University of Ottawa on Sunday, March 20, as the Wildcats extended their winning streak to seven on the final day of the Penn State Brehend Invitational. Villanova first defeated Notre Dame, 7-6, and then went on to win against Ottawa, bringing its overall record to 8-7. Villanova has not finished a season above .500 since 2000.

Junior driver Kim Pare (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the squad with four goals and one assist in the win over the Irish. She was also 2-for-4 on sprints and added four steals to her offensive exploits.

Senior Ellen Howe (San Diego, Calif.) added one goal and one assist while drawing two ejections. Senior Aimee Corsiglia (Mountain View, Calif.) scored twice and stole once to help the Wildcats to a crucial win.

Goalie Jess Wells (Newport Beach, Calif.) had 10 saves in Villanova's victory. Freshmen Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico), Julie Ramaley (Old Grennwich, Conn.) and Meredith Klipa (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each had at least one steal while Christina Dopp (Stockton, Calif.) and Nicole Sherry (Poway, Calif.) each added an assist.

Pare continued to lead the offense, putting away four goals versus Ottawa. She was also 3-for-3 on sprints and added an assist in her effort. She leads all scorers with a total of 35 goals on the season.

Howe came up with three goals and an assist. Corsiglia and Ramaley each had two goals and one assist, while Danielle Hanson (Winter Springs, Fla.) added a goal and an assist and Martinez had a goal and a steal.

 

 

Klipa and Dopp also had assists, while Sherry accounted for a goal, an assist and two saves. Sarah Oberhauser (Saratoga, Calif.) also had an assist. Wells played the first half in goal, accounting for six saves while allowing six goals. Erin Foley (Chicago, Ill.) played the second half in the goal, with five saves and five goals against her.

Villanova is on its way to a winning season for the first time since the 2000 squad finished at 14-9. In 2001, the Wildcats went 7-17, while in 2002 the record was 7-23. In 2003 Villanova finished 11-21. Last season, Villanova finished 12-18 and third in the MAAC Conference, which now owns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
