March 17, 1999

On March 13-14, the Villanova University women's water polo team traveled to College Park, Md., looking to extend a seven-game winning streak in the CWPA Tournament. The Wildcats defeated James Madison, 17-6, in their first game on March 13, to extend their unbeaten streak to eight games. Villanova lost its final two game of the weekend, however, to Maryland (11-7) and to Princeton 11-9 in overtime, to drop their season mark to 11-4.

Against James Madison in their first game of the weekend, both sophomore Carrie Boyle and freshman Alexis Asher went a perfect four-for-four on shot attempts to record four goals apiece. Freshman Janine Kusza was perfect as well, with three goals on three attempts to go along with three steals. Junior Brigitte Bayster and freshman Kelly Rodriguez were also outstanding on offense, as Bayster recorded two goals, two assists and four steals, and Rodriguez posted two goals and four assists. In goal for the Wildcats, Amanda Sewald led the team with four blocks and one steal for the win.

Later on in the afternoon against Maryland, Villanova lost to the host Terrapins 11-7, despite three goals by Boyle and a career-high 13 stops in net by freshman goalie Carly Sproul. It was the first loss for the Wildcats since their loss to Massachusetts on February 28, a streak that spanned eight games.

In the tournament's final game against Princeton, Boyle helped lead Villanova back from a two-goal deficit in the closing minutes of the contest to send the game into overtime. Despite holding a two-goal lead in the extra session, the Wildcats saw Princeton rally for a 11-9 victory. Boyle scored five goals and added four steals in the loss. Rodriguez added three goals, two steals and one assist, while Sproul tallied double digit saves for the second straight game with 10.

The Wildcats will resume play on March 20-21, hosting a home tournament at the Villanova Swim Center, on the campus of Villanova University.
