Villanova water polo won four straight to begin March on a high note
March 16, 1999 Beginning its Spring Trip to California on March 1, at Whittier, the Villanova University women's water polo team defeated Whittier 13-7. From there, the Wildcats again went on the road where they defeated Cal State San Bernardino (15-8), Claremont (13-8) and Pomona (10-2). With four victories in the first three days of their trip, the Cats improved their record to 7-2-0 overall on the season. Leading the way for Villanova against Whittier was sophomore Carrie Boyle, who scored four goals on six shots. Junior Brigitte Bayster was outstanding as well, recording three goals, four assists and two steals. In goals for the Wildcats, freshman Carly Sproul and sophomore Amanda Sewald each posted three saves in the 13-7 victory. One day later against Cal State San Bernardino, Bayster and freshman Kelly Rodriguez each scored three goals apiece to lead the Villanova offensive attack. Bayster added five assists and six steals on the afternoon as well. Sproul received the win in net, as she tallied two saves. In the first of two games on Wednesday, March 3, the Wildcats defeated Claremont 13-8. Bayster kept up her hot streak with five goals on six shots, and also had six steals and one assist. Boyle finished just behind Bayster with four goals and had a team-high three assists. Sproul recorded her third straight victory in goal with six saves. In the day's second game against Pomona, Villanova got two or more goals from three players led by Bayster's three scores, to defeat Pomona 10-2. Sproul saved four shots in goal for the Wildcats Villanova will resume play on March 6, traveling to Occidental for the Occidental Water Polo Tournament against the likes of Bakersfield, Chapman and Occidental. |
