Water Polo Plays Well Despite Dropping 14-7 Decision to Princeton
March 16, 2001
Villanova, PA - On a night when the Villanova water polo team honored their three graduating seniors, Villanova came out early and hung tough with nationally ranked #14 Princeton University before being overpowered and dropping a hard fought 14-7 match.
A right handed no look shot from freshman Katherine Kidde (Pasadena, CA/Polytechnic) found the upper right corner to tie the match at 3-3 five minutes into the first quarter. Kidde's goal was her first career tally and was Villanova's third goal of the match. Scoring the first two goals for Villanova were Kelly Ganz (Long Beach, CA/Woodrow Wilson) and Erin Agee (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Academy).
The Wildcats allowed Princeton to tally two more times in the final two minutes of the first quarter to regain the lead 5-3. From that point, Villanova could not recover. The Tigers scored two more times before Villanova's Maria Greshock (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) answered at the 5:23 mark of the second quarter. The 7-4 deficit was as close as the Wildcats would get the remainder of the game. Despite playing well, Villanova was overcome by Princeton's powerful offense that struck five times in a row over a seven minute span of the second and third quarters.
Villanova received two of their three final goals from one of the night's three honorees, Carrie Boyle (Redlands, CA/Redlands). The senior standout tallied once at 3:08 of the third quarter and once just 38 seconds into the fourth quarter to cut Princeton's lead to 13-6. Greshock followed Boyle's fourth quarter goal with her second tally of the game just a minute later. Princeton would strike once more at the 4:01 mark to finish the scoring and earn the 14-7 victory.
With the loss, Villanova drops to 3-13 overall, while #14 Princeton improves to 11-5.
