THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Villanova water polo team traveled to Thousand Oaks, Calif. over spring break to compete in the annual Cal Lutheran University Spring Classic. Games were held at the Samuelson Aquatics Center and Oaks Christian H.S. March 5-7th.

The Wildcats had six games over three days and came home to a tournament record of 1-5.

The team will next be in action at the Penn State-Behrend Invitational March 20-21st where they will face Chatham, Mercyhurst, PSU-Behrend and Gannon.

Cal Lutheran Recap

In the opening game of the tournament, the Wildcats fell to Cal Lutheran, 12-6. CLU's Joy Cyprian had a game-high 4 goals while Villanova was led by Jen Soares three. Maria Apablasa netted two goals of her own while Nicole Lum tallied one in the defeat.

CLU goalie Heather Bridges had 4 saves in the defeat and VU's Andrea La Fevers also captured 4 saves of her own.

Claremont M-S Recap

In the second game of opening night, the Wildcats fell to Claremont M.S., 6-4. CMS held the score advange through three quarters, leading 5-1, but Villanova's 3 goal fourth period comeback was not enough to seal the victory.

Villanova saw goals from Jen Soares, Hannah Ishida, Sara Kane and Kathleen Maloney. CMS's Sarah Assaad had a game-high three goals.

Andrea La Fevers tallied 12 saves in the loss while CMS keeper Abigail Woodruff totaled 8 in the win.

Cal Baptist Recap

Villanova began the second day of competition with an 8:30 a.m. date with Cal Baptist. CBU came out victorious, winning 18-7 over the Wildcats.

 

 

Villanova's freshmen had a big day in the pool with Julia Penkal notching three goals as well as Hannah Ishida and Lauren Peachey contributing to the goal count. Sarah Armel and Nicole Lum also netted scores for the Wildcats.

CBU had goals coming from ten different players in the victory.

Saves were not tracked in the game.

Ponoma Pitzer Recap

In their second game of the day, Villanova fell to Pomona-Pitzer, 13-5. Jen Soares and Kathleen Maloney tallied two goals each for the Wildcats and Sara Kane added one in the loss. Ponoma Pitzer's Tamara Parea led all players with five goals.

Goalie statistics were not tracked during the game.

Cal State Northridge Recap

CSU Northridge defeated Villanova 13-6. The Wildcats were lead by Jen Soares and Kathleen Maloney with two goals apiece while Sara Kane and Sarah Armel each netted one goal in the defeat. CSN's Kirra Kylander, Whitney Delgado, Renee Gargiulo Sydney Sonoda and Kristin McLaughlin all had two goals for Northridge while Chelsea Curran, Alison Pierce and Jessica Goforth each had one goal in the victory.

Goalie statistics were not tracked during this game.

La Verne Recap

In the final game of the tournament, Villanova defeated La Verne 14-7 to end their tournament run. Freshman Katie Hannigan led the team with a team-high 3 goals while Hannah Ishida, Sara Kane and Maria Apablasa each netted two goals apiece. Julia Penkal, Lauren Peachey, Maria Campanile, Kathleen Maloney and Kristy Majetich each tallied one goal in the victory.

La Verne's Elizabeth Roberts had a game-high 6 goals while Ashley Forsberg added one.

VU's Andrea La Fevers had 7 saves in the win; La Verne's Lauren Shephard had 10 in the defeat.
