WHITTIER, Calif.- The Villanova water polo team (1-9 overall, 0-0 MAAC) fell to Whittier in a tough offensive battle between both sides 13-11 in overtime. The team returns to play tomorrow as they face Chapman to wrap up their California trip. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m.
The first quarter began with the Poets scoring a goal to take a 1-0 lead with 6:19 left in the quarter. Just thirty seconds later Villanova would score a goal courtesy of Dominique Clark to tie the game up at 1-1. The Wildcats would take the lead in the first quarter after Katie French scored a goal off an assist by Lizzie Louwers which made the score 2-1 with 3:59 left in the quarter. A penalty goal by Whittier would close the quarter the score tied up at 2-2.
The second quarter began with Dominique Clark scoring her second goal of the game to give Villanova a 3-2 lead with 7:18 remaining in the half. Whittier would attempt to score soon after but a strong block by Kate Stenmoen would deny the Poets the opportunity for a goal. With 6:01 left in the half Whittier would score a goal while on the powerplay to tie the game up at 3-3. Later in the half, Whittier would score an even strength goal to take the lead 4-3 with 3:23 left in the half. The Poets would be able to add three more goals before the half ended to increase the lead to 7-3.
The third quarter began with Villanova scoring an early power play goal courtesy of Sara Lynn Abele to cut the Poets lead to 7-4. But Whittier would answer back with a goal with 4:36 left to bring the Poet lead back up to 8-4. With 3:23 left in the quarter, Dominique Clark would score a goal to get only behind the Poets 8-5. Shortly after, Sara Lynn Abele would score her second goal of the game to make the score 8-6 with 2:40 left in the quarter. Abele would add one more goal to close the quarter with the score 9-7.
In the fourth, Whittier would score the first goal of the quarter with 5:02 left in the quarter to take the lead 10-7. Then with 3:59 left in the quarter Camille Oswald would score her first goal of the game to shrink the Poets lead to 10-8. Soon after, Sara Lynn Abele would score her third goal of the game to cut the Whittier lead to one with 3:22 left in the game. With 1:13 left in the game, Dominique Clark would score the game tying goal to make the score 10-10. Due to strong defense by both sides the quarter would close with the score 10-10.
Dominique Clark would score the first goal of the overtime period to make the score 11-10 with 2:31 left in the overtime period. Whittier would tie the game up shortly after with 2:07 remaining with the score being 11-11. Then with 1:36 remaining the Poets would score a goal to take the lead 12-11. In the sixth period, Whittier would increase their lead to 13-11 after a goal was scored with 1:26 left in the period. Villanova would be unable to score in the period due to strong defense by Whittier leaving the final score to be 13-11.
The Wildcats will wrap up their California trip tomorrow night as they face Chapman. The game is scheduled to be play at 10:00 p.m.
