THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Villanova women's water polo team (3-11) tallied three straight wins to close out the Cal Lutheran Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats began Saturday with a loss to UC Santa Barbara (8-11) before defeating Occidental (1-7) for the team's first win of the season.
Villanova carried the momentum into Sunday as the Wildcats defeated La Verne (0-6) and Cal Lutheran (1-7) to finish the invite 3-3.
Sarina Shibata led the Wildcats with 15 goals over the course of the tournament.
Game 4: Villanova 11, Occidental 5
Sarina Shibata scored three straight goals to start the game 3-0, a lead the Wildcats would never relinquish.
Julie Conrath made 16 saves.
Game 5: Villanova 9, La Verne 3
Sarina Shibata recorded another hat trick as the Wildcats defeated La Verne to start Sunday. Naomi Ng tallied two goals while Sheila Gerrity, Sarah Kesack, Sadie Dutcher and Lizzie Newman each recorded one.
The Wildcats held La Verne to just 10 shots in the game while Villanova recorded 20. The Wildcats tallied 11 steals in the game, with Edwards and Shibata each earning three.
Julie Conrath had another strong outing with seven saves while allowing just three goals.
Game 6: Villanova 8, Cal Lutheran 6
Villanova finished the invitational with a win over host Cal Lutheran. The Wildcats trailed 4-1 early in the second quarter until a Sheila Gerrity goal sparked a comeback. Villanova went into halftime down 5-4.
Sarina Shibata, who tallied three goals for the third straight game, tied the game at five early in the third quarter as the Wildcats scored four consecutive goals. Cal Lutheran added one more with 17 seconds left in the game, but Villanova took the 8-6 game.
Julie Conrath made 10 saves in goal.
The Wildcats are in California for the rest of spring break, visiting Whittier on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET and Chapman on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
