Villanova, PA- On Friday, February 9, the Wolverines of Michigan traveled to Villanova University to do battle with Villanova Wildcat water polo team in the first day of the 2001 Princeton Invitational. In their first game of their inaugural varsity season, the Wolverines defeated the Wildcats by the score of 18-6. With the loss Villanova falls to 0-1 overall and Michigan improves to 1-0.

The game got off to a quick start as the Wolverines tallied the game's first goal 56 seconds into the first quarter. The Wildcats responded. Senior Carrie Boyle netted the first of her four goals on the night with 3:27 remaining in the quarter to bring the match to 1-1. The Wolverines took the lead back in quick fashion when Julie Nisbet scored her only goal of the game 10 seconds later.

Michigan tallied two more times before Boyle got her second goal of the evening 43 seconds into the second quarter. Trailing 4-2, the Wildcat offense began to struggle, as they could not score a goal over the next 9 minutes and 46 seconds. Michigan took advantage of the offensive lapse, scoring the game's next eight goals. Stephanie Morse led the Wolverines during the stretch recording three goals.

With 3:31 remaining in the third quarter, Boyle ripped her third goal of the game to bring the score to 12-3. Michigan again responded tallying the next three goals, before Villanova's Erin Agee scored her first goal of the 2001 season. After Agee's goal the Wildcats trailed 15-4 with 4:25 remaining in the game. From that point on the teams traded goals. Michigan tallied three goals and the Wildcats netted two, to bring the final score to 18-6. Scoring the last two Villanova goals were Boyle, her fourth of the season, and sophomore transfer Maria Greshock who scored her first career goal as a Wildcat with three seconds remaining in the game.

Boyle led all players in the match with four goals. Leading the way for Michigan was Morse and Maribeth Sitkowski, each player netted three goals. In the game prior to Villanova-Michigan, Indiana University defeated the University of California-Santa Cruz by the score of 13-10. Kelly McKay led the Hoosiers by tallying four goals on the night. For the Banana Slugs, Emily Erskine and Maria Zavala each netted four goals.

Villanova will be in back in action tomorrow at Princeton University. The Wildcats are poised and ready to do battle with Indiana at 12:15 p.m. and Massachusetts at 7:20 p.m.
