VILLANOVA, Pa. – In the final BIG EAST weekly honors of the season, senior defensive specialist/libero Allison Fitzgerald (St. Louis, Mo.) earned Defensive Player of the Week and junior middle blocker Amanda Pedersen-Henry (Murrieta, Calif.) earned Offensive Player of the Week. The two student-athletes helped Villanova to a 2-0 weekend to clinch the final spot in the conference tournament.
This was Fitzgerald’s sixth time receiving a BIG EAST weekly honor and her second time winning Defensive Player of the Week. She averaged 4.83 digs per set over the two wins and had a match-high 21 digs in the Wildcats upset over #13 Creighton. She led a defense that over the weekend had a league-best in kills allowed (11.00), was second in service aces allowed (0.50) and assists allowed (10.50) and was third best in opponent hitting percentage (.192).
This was Pedersen-Henry’s third time receiving a BIG EAST weekly honor and her first Offensive Player of the Week nomination. She averaged four points per set and 3.17 kills per set to go along with a league-high .472 hitting percentage for the weekend. She tallied 19 kills on only 36 swings and two errors in Villanova’s two matches with 12 of those kills coming in the upset over Creighton where she hit .478. She also added three service aces, 24 points and 1.67 digs per set to help her team clinch the final playoff spot of the conference.
