VILLANOVA, Pa. - Head volleyball coach Josh Steinbach has announced the Wildcats' schedule for the 2009 season.

"The goal for our pre-conference season is to prepare us for the always-difficult BIG EAST schedule," Steinbach said. "We're looking forward to getting the 2009 season started."

Villanova will face five opponents who participated in the NCAA Tournament a year ago and will compete in four tournaments before the BIG EAST Conference portion of its schedule is underway.

The Wildcats will open the season against Youngstown State on August 28 in a tournament hosted by the University of Maryland. They will also face Stony Brook and Maryland in the same tournament.

After a stop in Brooklyn to face NCAA Tournament-team Long Island, Villanova will take part in the Big Five Tournament at Penn beginning September 4 and will face La Salle, Temple and Penn.

"We're looking forward to the first Big Five Tournament, it will be a good chance to develop the Philadelphia rivalries," said Steinbach.

Villanova will first be seen on its home court on September 11 hosting UMBC in the annual Villanova Classic. The Wildcats also host Princeton and George Washington.

The final tournament before conference season begins will see the Wildcats head to Charlottesville, Va., where they will compete against Albany, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

"The weekend at Virginia will certainly be our most challenging weekend on the road," Steinbach said. "We will be playing three tough matches in a row against quality opponents."

The BIG EAST Conference season will begin with an early test for the Wildcats as they host Cincinnati and Louisville the weekend of September 25. Both were tournament teams a year ago.

"We are starting off the BIG EAST season with the most challenging weekend. Both Cincinnati and Louisville are tough opponents that will test us early."

Villanova faces DePaul and Notre Dame on the road before heading back home to play five consecutive matches at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse. Also at home in conference play is USF and Georgetown.

The Wildcats close out the 2009 regular season with its final four matches on the road against West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Marquette.

After a one year absence, Villanova looks to return to the BIG EAST Conference tournament which will be held in Louisville November 20-22.
