Volleyball Claims Spring Tournament Crown

March 26, 2007

Villanova, Pa. - On Saturday, March 24, the Villanova volleyball team played host to nine other teams in a spring tournament that was held in Jake Nevin Field House. The Wildcats came away victorious in the title match against Seton Hall to be crowned champions.

There were nine other teams that competed in the tournament, with the teams divided into two pools. Villanova finished first in their pool and advanced to the semifinal match. There they would defeat University of Pennsylvania to move on to the championship match.

In the championship match, the Wildcats would face BIG EAST for Seton Hall. After trailing 18-15, Villanova would mount a furious comeback to eventually take the match, 25-23.

"It was a great day for the girls to come from behind to beat Seton Hall in the championship match," Gilad Doron said. Doron, who was Villanova's head coach this past season, had accepted the head coaching position at the University of San Francisco earlier in the week. This was his final opportunity to coach the team before he begins at USF.

It was a long day for the Wildcats, playing eight games in pool play and then two more games in the semifinals and finals.

"The girls showed a lot of determination and that they are playing at a high level right now in the spring. Offensively and defensively they showed a lot of promise. We were very excited to be able to win this tournament on our home court," Doron said.
