Women's Volleyball swept by USC
LOS ANGELES - Behind 14 kills from junior outside hitter Jennifer Kessy, the No. 10 USC women's volleyball team defeated Villanova, 15-8, 15-2, 15-2, in front of 559 at the North Gym on Friday night in the Women of Troy's home opener.
In the first meeting between the schools, USC improved to 4-0 while Villanova fell to 3-1.
USC, which hit .314 as a team and held Villanova to .000, actually trailed early in Game 1, 6-4, but rallied to take the first game. The Women of Troy scored the first 9 points in Game 2 and followed that by scoring the first 13 points of Game 3 for a pair of easy wins.
USC junior setter Janice Mounts, playing only 2 games, had a match-high 25 assists while junior middle blocker Alaina Kipps had a match-high 4 blocks.
USC true freshman and walk-on middle blocker Shannon Redfern, filling in for All-American candidate Jasmina Marinkovic (who was resting a sore back), performed nicely in her place. She had 6 kills in 13 attempts in addition to 4 digs and 2 blocks.
Villanova setter Stacy Moline had 17 assists and outside hitter Elizabeth Jones added 9 digs. USC next plays Sunday (Sept. 7) at 1 p.m. at the North Gym when it hosts No. 22 Colorado. On Saturday (Sept. 6), Colorado takes on Villanova in a non-conference match-up at 1 p.m. at the North Gym.
