Wildcats Defeat Temple in Five Games
PHILADELPHIA, PA.- In a match played at Temple's McGonigle Hall, the Villanova Wildcats defeated the Temple Owls 3-2 (15-7, 11-15, 11-15, 15-5, 15-13). With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-5 overall, while Temple falls to 8-4. This is the second time this season that Villanova has downed the Owls in five games.
Villanova came out strong as they raced to a 14-0 lead in game one. Temple went on a small spurt to cut the Wildcat lead to 14-7, before senior Stacy Evans put away a kill to give Villanova a 1-0 lead in the match.
Temple rebounded to take a 2-1 lead by winning games two and three by an identical 15-11 score.
The Wildcats, however, were outstanding in the match's fourth game as they tallied a .378 hitting percentage en route to the 15-5 win.
In the fifth and deciding game, Villanova never trailed as they held on for a 15-13 victory. Evans ended the match on a kill off an assist by freshman Cathy Arnette.
Evans led the way for Villanova with a match-high 21 kills to go with 10 digs, three block solos and two block assists. Senior Marisa Davidson contributed a strong match with 14 kills, two block solos and five block assists. Also adding double figures in kills for the Wildcats were Megan O'Brien with 12 and Elizabeth Jones with 10. Arnette tallied 52 assists in her second collegiate start.
Temple was paced by Tamu Cooper and Sharia Bryant who each had 15 kills. Setter Akiko Hatakeyma recorded 54 assists in the losing effort.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when they travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in a Big East contest at 7:30 p.m.
