Villanova Wins Two At The Virginia Tournament
Coming into the weekend riding high on a two-game winning streak and coming off a win over Drexel in their first home match, the Villanova volleyball team entered the Virginia Tournament and won two out of their three matches to improve their record to 8-5. Losing their first match on Friday, Sept. 19, against tournament-host Virginia 2-3 (8-15, 10-15, 15-9, 15-8, 12-15), the Wildcats came back to defeat Iowa State 3-1 (17-15, 15-7, 8-15, 15-6), and Northeastern 3-0 (15-1, 15-4, 15-10) on Saturday, Sept. 20.
In Villanova's first match of the tournament against the Cavaliers of Virginia, the Wildcats went down two games to none, only to come back and tie the match at two. Despite impressive play throughout the match by junior Megan O'Brien who tallied 21 kills and 30 digs, the Wildcats lost 12-15 in the final game.
The Wildcats came back on Saturday to avenge the previous day's loss, as they defeated the Cyclones of Iowa State 3-1 in the day's first match. Villanova was once again led by O'Brien who had 20 kills and 13 digs, with senior co-captain Stacy Evans contributing 16 kills and 10 digs.
In their final match of the tournament, freshman setter Cathy Arnette starting in the first match of her collegiate career, had 39 assists and senior co-captain Marisa Davidson totaled 14 kills in helping lead the Wildcats to their eighth victory of the season. Evans contributed nine kills in the win, putting her only 211 kills away from breaking the Villanova all-time mark.
The Wildcats return home to play the University of Delaware on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 pm.
