Villanova Beats Providence to Finish 2-1 at Rhode Island Tournament

After beating the Rhode Island Rams on Friday, Sept. 12, and losing to nationally ranked Washington State earlier in the day on Saturday, Sept. 13, Villanova beat the Providence Friars in three games (16-14, 16-14, 15-13), to finish the weekend with a 2-1 record at the University of Rhode Island Subway Classic Tournament.

On Friday against Rhode Island, the Wildcats fell in the third and fourth games (4-15, 7-15), after beating the Rams in the first two games (15-9, 16-14). In the fifth game, the Wildcats triumphed 15-11, to win the match and improve their season record to 4-3. Villanova was led by freshman Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./ Ballarmine Prep) who finished with 21 kills and sophmore setter Stacey Moline (Sagle, Idaho/ Sandpoint H.S.) who tallied 58 assists.

Against Washington State in Saturday's first match, Villanova lost in three games (7-15, 12-15, 2-15) to the 10-0 Cougars. In the loss, senior Marisa Davidson (Mt. Airy, Maryland/ Glenelg H.S.) and juniors Elizabeth Jones (Los Altos, Calif./ St. Francis) and Megan O'Brien (San Jose, Calif./ St. Francis) led the Wildcats with seven kills apiece.

In the Wildcats' second match of the day against Providence, Villanova staged comebacks in both the first and second games, to beat the Friars and put themselves back over the .500 mark. The Wildcats were again led by Davidson who totaled 13 kills, and Moline who had 41 assists. For their outstanding play throughout the tournament, Davidson and junior Megan O'Brien were named to the University of Rhode Island Subway Classic all-Tournament Team.

The Wildcats return to the Main Line for their home opener, against Drexel University on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 pm.
