Women's Volleyball Squeezes The Orange
VILLANOVA, Pa.- Looking to redeem themselves after a Friday loss at the hands of Notre Dame, Villanova did just that beating Syracuse 3-0 (15-7, 15-12, 15-13) on Sunday, Nov. 2, at Jake NevinField House on the campus of Villanova University. With the victory, the Wildcats record improves to 16-6 overall and 6-1 in the Big East.
Villanova got out to a fast start, beating the Orangewomen 15-7 in the first game to take a 1-0 lead. Down 12-8 in the second game, the Wildcats rallied behind their senior captain Stacy Evans (Los Altos, CA./ St. Francis H.S.) who finished with 13 kills, and came back to defeat Syracuse (22-9, 4-3) by the score of 15-12 to extend their lead to 2-0.
In the day's third game, Villanova again found themselves down 8-4 and needing a comeback. A comeback is just what they got, rallying from a four-point deficit to defeat the Orangewomen 15-13 and take the match 3-0.
Junior Elizabeth Jones (Los Altos, CA./ St. Francis H.S.) was outstanding in the Wildcat victory recording 11 kills to go along with 15 kills. Jones presently leads the Big East Conference in kills for conference games.
The Villanova three freshman phenoms once again played a large part in the Wildcat victory. Middle blocker Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, WA./ Bellarmine Prep) had 10 kills and five digs, while outside hitter Ruth Ann Blankenheim (Lighthouse Point, FL./ Cardinal Gibbons) tallied six kills and a team-high 17 digs. Setter Cathy Arnette (Chesapeake, VA./ Western Beach) once again put up stellar assist numbers with a game-high 42.
Villanova will travel to Seton Hall to resume their Big East Conference schedule on Friday, Nov. 7, against the Pirates at 7 p.m.
