Notre Dame Ends Villanova's Home Winning Streak
VILLANOVA, Pa. --- In a battle for first place in the Big East and to try to extend their home winning streak to 16 games, Villanova dropped their first Big East game of the season 3-0 (8-15, 7-15, 7-15) to Notre Dame, on Friday, Oct. 31, in a match played at Jake Nevin Field House.
With the loss, the Wildcats record drops to 15-6 overall and 5-1 in the Big East.
The game began as a hard fought war, typical of Big East Conference play.
The Fighting Irish took over, however, and pulled away to a 15-8 victory in the night's first game.
Led by Angie Harris who finished the match with 13 kills, Notre Dame won the second game 15-7, to take a two game lead.
Despite pulling out to a 5-1 lead in game three, the Wildcats could not hold on as the Fighting Irish came back for the victory, winning 15-7 to take the match 3-0.
In the loss, junior Elizabeth Jones (Los Altos, CA./ St. Francis) and freshman Ruth Ann Blankenheim (Lighthouse Point, FL./ Cardinal Gibbons) each had nine kills. Freshman setter Cathy Arnette (Chesapeake, VA/ Western Beach) contributed with 37 assists for the Wildcats.
Coming into tonight's match, Villanova had 15 straight home victories at Jake Nevin Field House, dating back to 1995.
The Wildcats were a perfect 8-0 at Jake Nevin Field House during the 1996 season.
Villanova remains at home to take on the Syracuse Orangemen on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3 p.m.
