Villanova's Season comes to an End in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The 2011 Villanova volleyball season came to a close on Friday afternoon as the Wildcats fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-16) in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship hosted by Marquette University.

Junior Morgan Petkovich and sophomore Allison Williams recorded five kills apiece and senior Maggie Mergen and junior Krista Andersen each tallied four kills.

Freshman Allie DiBernardo dished out 13 assists and senior Kim Maroon collected 15 digs. Sophomore Mariah Henley notched eight digs.

Cincinnati opened the first set with a 7-2 stretch and extended its lead to 12-4 forcing the Wildcats to use their final timeout. After the break, Petkovich connected for a kill and Mergen followed with an ace to close the gap, 12-7. Sophomores Allison Williams and Carly Edwards teamed up for a block, but the Bearcats continued to lead 15-9. Cincinnati closed out the first set on a 10-2 run with a final score of 25-11.

Williams found the floor for a kill in the second frame that pushed Villanova in front, 4-2. Williams connected for another kill, but the Bearcats cruised ahead to an 11-6 lead and Villanova called its first timeout. A kill from Petkovich had the score at 16-10, but two quick points from the Bearcats forced the Wildcats into their final timeout. After the break DiBernardo served an ace and Williams smashed a kill, but Cincinnati still led, 19-13. A 6-1 run for the Bearcats closed out the set with a 25-14 victory.



Mergen slammed a kill in the third set to put Villanova on the board and Petkovich connected for a kill as the Bearcats held on to a 5-3 lead. Cincinnati went on a 6-1 run and had the Wildcats use a timeout to regroup. A 4-0 run for the Bearcats sent Villanova back to the sidelines. With Cincinnati leading 23-11, Maroon served back-to-back aces and `Nova closed the gap to 23-13. Mergen connected on a kill at 24-15, but the Bearcats closed out the set and won the match, 3-0.

Villanova concludes its season at 17-13. The Wildcats finished with an 8-6 BIG EAST record this season.
