MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Villanova University volleyball team () ended its run for the BIG EAST Tournament title tonight (Nov. 16) with a 3-0 loss to USF (). With the loss it marks the end of two careers of two remarkable student-athletes in senior's Kacy Sellers and Alona Cherkez.
Cherkez and Sellers led the Wildcats the entire season and tonight was no different as they both showed why they deserved the First Team All-Big East Selection registering 30 kills as a duo with Sellers picking up 11 and Cherkez grabbing 19. Cherkez also led the team in digs with 18. Junior's Dana Tartazky and Whitney Harrington also played well getting seven and five kills, respectively.
Sophomore Chelseas Graman picked up 48 assists on the day.
"This was a tough loss to take but it won't take away from the remarkable season we had led by two amazing seniors in Alona and Kacy," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "This team was a great group of women to start my head coaching career with and I will remember this season forever."
In game one the Wildcats stormed out to an early four-point lead but it would quickly evaporate as the Bulls stormed pack to take the lead and eventually the game, 30-25. As a team Villanova only hit .106 in the first frame while USF swung a .317.
Game two started just like game one with VU grabbing an early four-point lead with USF coming back to tie and eventually take the lead. Unlike game one the Wildcats would not trail for long as they fought back to take a lead of their own and eventually earned themselves two game-points. USF withstood the charge and fought to a 30-30 tie. The Bulls would earn the next two points dropping VU 32-30 and increasing their lead to 2-0.
USF took the momentum from the end of game two and carried it over to game three picking up a 30-21 victory.
