VILLANOVA, Pa. - For the second straight match, the Villanova volleyball team (17-12, 8-6 BIG EAST) forced a fifth set, but the Wildcats fell 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 23-25, 26-24, 4-15) to Cincinnati in the final regular game of the season.
Freshman Allie DiBernardo recorded another double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs. Oertli dished out 16 assists.
Maroon collected 40 digs. This was the third time this season in which she tallied 40+ digs. Chatham posted 12 digs and sophomore Mariah Henley added 11.
Villanova jumped to a 9-5 lead in the first set, but the Bearcats stormed back to tie the set at 12 apiece. After falling behind 18-14, the Wildcats used a 5-1 run with kills from sophomores Carly Edwards and Allison Williams and tied the set 19-19. Williams connected for back-to-back kills to give Villanova set point, 24-21 and Andersen slammed the winning kill, 25-22.
After dropping the second frame, 25-14, the Wildcats trailed Cincinnati 8-5 in the third set and used their first timeout. Three errors from the Bearcats gave room for Villanova to close the gap, 14-12. Still trailing Cincinnati, 21-16, the Wildcats capitalized on errors and got back to within two points, 22-20. Another error by the Bearcats had Villanova within one point, but Cincinnati slammed a final kill and won, 25-23.
The Wildcats trailed 17-13 in the fourth, but after their final timeout came back to tie the set at 22-22 using an offensive attack. Mergen found the floor for a kill at 23-23 and Petkovich connected to play for set point, 25-24. An error from Cincinnati put Villanova on top, 26-24 to force a fifth set.
The Bearcats owned the final frame as Villanova fell 15-4 and dropped the match.
The Wildcats have earned the seventh seed in the 2011 BIG EAST Tournament and will have a rematch against Cincinnati, who earned the second seed. This year's tournament is hosted by Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. Villanova will face the Bearcats in the first round on Friday, Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
