MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Villanova University volleyball team (17-11, 9-5 BIG EAST) clinched the number three seed in the BIG EAST tournament today with a huge 3-0 victory over Marquette University (8-16, 5-9 BIG EAST). Villanova will travel back to MU this Friday to take on USF at 7 p.m. in their opening round action.

"This win was huge," said head coach Josh Steinbach. "The girls knew their backs were against the wall and they came out and played a great match. Sophomore Elysse Studzinski really stepped up her game today and Alona (Cherkez) and Kacy (Sellers) continued their impressive senior seasons."

The Wildcats knew going into the match they could either clinch third with a win or fall out of the entire tournament with a loss. They opened up the match with a 30-25 victory followed by two games that were pushed to the brink. VU won both 33-31 and 31-29.

This win puts the `Cats into the BIG EAST tournament for the third time in the past five years. It also marks the best conference finish since 1997 when they finished second.

Alona Cherkez led the team with her 17th double-double of the season with 19 kills and 17 digs. Kacy Sellers chipped in with 11 kills and three blocks while Studzinski had nine kills.

Sophomore Chelsea Graman handed out 45 assists as well as recording two kills including the match winner in the third game. Junior Emily Brown continued her tough defense from the libero position picking up 14 digs.
