FT. MYERS, Fla. - Senior Kim Maroon collected 36 digs to lead Villanova's defense as the Wildcats (17-10) defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday. This was the ninth match this season in which Maroon recorded 30+ digs.
The Eagles got out to a 10-6 lead early in the first set which sent Villanova into a timeout. The Wildcats were down 14-9 before Andersen, Mergen and Petkovich found the floor for kills and helped `Nova close the gap to just two points, 16-14. After a timeout from FGCU, sophomore Mariah Henley served for five more points as Villanova led 19-16. An attack error from the Eagles gave Villanova set point, 24-18, but FGCU extended the match for two more plays before the Wildcats finished with a 25-20 victory.
It was the Wildcats who came out to a 10-6 lead in the second frame that had FGCU on the sidelines to regroup. The Eagles came back and were able to tie at 18 apiece and the two teams traded points back and forth until FGCU earned set point, 24-23 and Villanova called timeout. An attack error from the Eagles tied the score at 24-24, but the Wildcats could not connect and dropped the frame, 26-24.
With a 6-5 lead in the third set, Maroon took the ball to serve and served for eight consecutive points, including two aces and Villanova led, 13-5. Sophomore Allison Williams slammed two kills to extend the lead to 19-10 before an error gave the Wildcats set point, 24-16. FGCU scored two points to keep the set rolling, but Villanova took a 25-18 win.
The score tied four times early in the fourth set before Mergen and Andersen connected on kills, which gave Villanova a 16-12 advantage as the Eagles called timeout. After the break, FGCU cut the gap to three points, 21-18, but a 4-1 run from the Wildcats closed the set with a 25-19 victory and a 3-1 match.
The Wildcats will finish out the BIG EAST regular season at home next weekend. Villanova will face Louisville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11 before taking on Cincinnati Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. Sunday's match is senior day and the senior Wildcats will be honored in a short ceremony before the match.
