CINCINNATI, Ohio - Freshman outside hitter Lauren Carpenter (Lakewood, Colo.) led the team with 10 kills but Villanova (11-17, 5-8 BIG EAST) was dealt a 3-0 loss by Cincinnati (11-16, 9-4 BIG EAST) at the Lindner Center on Sunday afternoon. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18 in the Bearcats favor.
Over the past three weeks the Wildcats have faced the most difficult portion of their schedule for the season. In its last five matches Villanova has faced opponents who are a combined 47-18 (.723) in conference play for the year and the stretch has included matches against each of the three teams that are tied for first place in the BIG EAST standings with 12-1 league records.
Despite facing another formidable opponent the Wildcats got off to a quick start against the Bearcats and pulled out to an 8-3 lead in the first set. Freshman middle blocker Brittany Rembert (Orlando, Fla.) registered a kill for the first point of the day and Carpenter eventually had two kills to help Villanova forge the early five-point advantage.
The lead held until the middle of the set when Cincinnati scored three straight points to go in front 13-12 and take their first lead of the match. Coming out of a timeout Carpenter had a kill to tie the score at 13-13 but the Bearcats spurt grew into a 9-1 run and Cincinnati led 19-13 before the Wildcats scored again.
Carpenter came on strong in the second set and had six of her 10 kills while hitting .333 in that frame. She wound up with only four hitting errors on 34 attempts in the match and also added four digs and a block assist to her stat line. Senior outside hitter Krista Andersen (Lakeland, Fla.) chipped in with seven kills, two total blocks (one solo block, one block assist), two digs and a service ace.
In the second set the Bearcats led from start to finish although their lead was just one at 12-11 after Carpenter pounded down three consecutive kills. She was eventually answered by Cincinnati hitter Jordanne Scott and the Bearcats closed the set with a 13-5 run to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Andersen did her best hitting of the day in the third set, when she registered five kills on 10 attempts without committing an error. As a team Villanova hit .200 with 11 kills and only four errors in the third set to finish strong. Rembert had three of her four kills and also did not commit any errors during the final stanza.
Junior libero Mariah Henley (Hockessin, Del.) paced the Wildcats defense with 10 digs. Sophomore Allie DiBernardo (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and freshman Emma Pettit (Ft. Collins, Colo.) split setting duties for the day. Pettit had 13 assists and DiBernardo finished with 12, while both players came up with five digs.
Villanova returns to action with a 7 p.m. road match at Syracuse on Friday night. Last weekend at Jake Nevin Field House the Wildcats scored a 3-1 win over the Orange.
