Villanova Stomps on the Bulls in 3-1 Victory

TAMPA, Fla. - Junior Krista Andersen paved the way in her home state on Friday evening with 12 kills as the Villanova volleyball team (16-10, 8-4 BIG EAST) defeated USF 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23).

Junior Morgan Petkovich recorded her second consecutive double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs, while senior Maggie Mergen also connected for 10 kills. Mergen also had four blocks.

Senior Courtney Oertli and freshman Allie DiBernardo shared setting duties with Oertli giving out 19 assists to her teammates. DiBernardo dished out 18 assists.

Senior Kim Maroon collected 26 digs in the match.

The Bulls got out to an 11-8 lead in the first set as Villanova called timeout, but the `Cats came out of the break on a 5-2 run after kills from Andersen and Mergen. Mergen found the floor for a kill and a 15-13 lead before serving an ace to extend the gap to 18-15 forcing USF to call timeout. An error from the Bulls gave Villanova set point, 24-19 and though USF kept the set going for three additional points, Petkovich smashed a kill and the Wildcats won the set, 25-22.

Villanova called its first timeout trailing 17-14 in the second set. Sophomore Allison Williams connected for two kills and the Wildcats closed the gap to one point, 19-18, but USF scored on back-to-back plays and led 21-19 forcing Villanova into its second timeout. The Bulls used a 4-1 run to close out the frame with a 25-20 victory.

The teams traded points back-and-forth in the third set, but Villanova took a 12-10 lead after two errors from the Bulls. Mergen served an ace to give the Wildcats a 16-13 lead, which sent USF into a timeout. The Bulls came to within one point on multiple occasions after the break, but two kills from Williams closed out the set with a 25-20 win.



The forth set was extremely close as the score tied nine times before Villanova called timeout with the score tied at 19 even. Petkovich slammed a kill and consecutive errors from the Bulls kept the Wildcats in front, 22-20. After the Bulls took a timeout, Petkovich and Andersen slammed kills and Andersen found the floor for the matching-winning kill, a 25-23 victory.

Villanova will travel to non-conference opponent Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. The match is slated to being at 4:00 p.m.
