VILLANOVA, Pa. - It was senior day for the Villanova University volleyball team (15-10, 7-4 BIG EAST) today (Oct. 28) and it couldn't have gone better for the two departing seniors, Alona Cherkez and Kacy Sellers. Cherkez was able to notch 16 kills which put her at 550 for the season setting a new single-season record at VU. Sellers had an outstanding attack percentage of .533 which improved her career attack percentage to .301 which is number one in Villanova history.
VU defeated visiting Georgetown University (5-21, 1-9 BIG EAST) 3-0 (30-28, 30-21, 30-23).
As a team the Wildcats had their second best hitting performance of the year with a .372 percentage. The only match higher was their season opener against George Mason.
Three Wildcats had double-digit kills with Cherkez recording 16, Sellers having 18 and junior Dana Tartazky grabbing 10. Cherkez also had a team-high 15 digs to record another double-double.
Cherkez now sits 11 kills away from breaking the single-season BIG EAST record for kills in conference play.
Both seniors were recognized prior to the match along with team manager Katy Franta for the contributions to the Villanova volleyball program. All three will be missed next season but they still have at least three more regular season matches and possibly a few postseason matches as well.
The Wildcats will next be in action, Saturday, November 3rd at 2 p.m. as they travel to Rutgers University.
